Nebraska Completes Sweep of Doubleheader With 13-2 Win in Nightcap

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader against Cal Poly on Saturday at Haymarket Park, winning the opener 22-3 and the nightcap 13-2.

Nebraska send 16 batters to the plate in the sixth inning of the opener and erupted for 13 runs for the win in the first game. The Huskers used a combined four-hitter from four pitchers for the trium;ph in the nightcap.

With the pair of losses, Cal Poly falls to 6-10. Nebraska claimed three of the four games in the series after losing the opener 14-8 Thursday, improving to 9-6.

In the opener, Cal Poly scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings.

Tate Samuelson singled to knock in the run in the first, Dylan Doherty's groundout cashed in the run in the sixth and an error allowed the run to score in the seventh.

Cal Poly collected 15 hits, but stranded 15 runners on the basepaths and hit into three double plays.

Alex McKenna (pictured above) and Bradlee Beesley (pictured above) each had three hits for the Mustangs and John Mackay and Colby Barrick each added two hits.

Freshman right-hander Darren Nelson (2-1) took the loss and Nate Fisher (1-2) earned the win. Cal Poly used six pitchers and they combined to issue a dozen walks.

Cal Poly's only runs of the nightcap came courtesy of a two-run home run by McKenna in the sixth inning. It was his second homer of the year.

Sophomore southpaw Thomas Triantos (0-1) was tagged with the loss and Matt Warren (2-0) earned the win.

Cal Poly will open a seven-game home stand Monday night against New Mexico at 6 p.m. inside Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs also host No. 25 San Diego State next weekend and Dartmouth in two weeks, both for three-game series.
