Engelhardt's 68 Sparks Cal Poly to Sixth-Place Finish in Geiberger Invite

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Nick Engelhardt recorded a 68 as Cal Poly finished sixth in the Geiberger Invitational, which concluded a two-day, 54-hole run Tuesday at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course.

Engelhardt, who posted a 75 and 71 Monday, finished with a 54-hole two-under-par 214 total and a ninth-place tie with three other golfers.

Tanner Podres placed in a tie for 22nd place while Jimmy Castles finished in a tie for 26th place.

Cal Poly tallied a four-person 290 total and slipped one spot into sixth place with a six-over-par 870 aggregate on the 7,204-yard, par-72 course.

Entering the final round in fourth place, Brigham Young fired a six-under-par 282 total and finished tied for first place with Santa Clara, both with eight-under-par 856 totals.

Loyola Marymount finished third at 858 and Fresno State, the second-round leader, fell to fourth place at 859 after a 292 total Tuesday.

Despite a final-round 73, Alex Lee held on to claim individual honors. After a pair of 68s gave him a four-stroke lead entering the final round, Lee's seven-under-par 209 total was good enough for a one-shot victory over Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara (72-70-68—210).

Derek Ackerman of Santa Clara was third, another shot back, followed by Nick Swanson of UC Santa Barbara (71-72-69—212). Four golfers shared fifth place at 213.

Engelhardt carded five birdies and one bogey for his 68.

Podres recorded a 73 for a two-over-par 218 total while Castles carded a 74 for a 219.

Also scoring for Cal Poly were Nathan Clark with an eagle en route to a 75 and a 224 total for 41st place and Thomas Lehman with a 76 for a 228 total and 51st place.

Competing as an individual, Sage Casaga posted a 76 for a 232 total and 60th place.

Engelhardt finished second in the field with his 13 birdies over 54 holes. Engelhardt also was eighth in par-3 scoring at even par, Castles was third in par-4 scoring at two under par while Clark was 10th in par-5 scoring at five under par.

Cal Poly will compete in The Aggie by UC Davis on Friday through Sunday at the El Macero Country Club in Davis.
