DAVIS, Calif. – On a windy day in which players needed 4.5 to five hours to complete their round, Mitch Martin recorded a 73 to highlight Cal Poly's performance on the first of three days of competition Friday in the El Macero Classic at the El Macero Country Club.
Martin opened by carding a triple-bogey on the fourth hole, but parred the remaining eight holes on the front nine and posted four birdies and a pair of bogeys on the back nine for his one-over-par total on the 7,138-yard, par-72 course.
Martin (pictured above) is tied for sixth place with three other golfers, four shots behind first-round leader Sam Meek of Nevada, who carded a three-under-par 69. Grant Booth of Nevada is second with a 70 while three golfers share third place with 72s.
Nevada leads the team standings with a three-over-par four-person 291 total, five strokes ahead of UCLA. Host UC Davis is third at 299 while Cal Poly heads into Saturday's second round in ninth place with a 312 aggregate.
Cal Poly's other scoring golfers are Jimmy Castles with a 77 for 34th place, Thomas Lehman with an 80 for 56th place, Nick Engelhardt with an 82 for 65th place and Nathan Clark with an 83 for 72nd place.
Martin is seventh in the field of 81 golfers in par-4 scoring at one over par. His four birdies matched the tournament-leading number of nine other golfers.
Final round will be played Sunday morning.
