Cal Poly Remains in Ninth Place at El Macero Classic


DAVIS, Calif. – Cal Poly shaved seven strokes off its first-round score but remains in ninth place after 36 holes of play in the El Macero Classic men's golf tournament hosted by UC Davis on Saturday at the El Macero Country Club.

Led by a 75 from Nick Engelhardt (pictured at right) and 76s by Mitch Martin and Jimmy Castles, the Mustangs posted a four-person 17-over-par 305 total on the 7,138-yard, par-72 course.

Nevada continues to lead the 13-team field, following Friday's 291 with a 284 for a one-under-par 575 aggregate and a 15-stroke advantage over Texas Tech. UCLA is another three strokes back in third place.

Cal Poly enters Sunday's final round five shots behind No. 8 Air Force.

Martin, who shot a 73 Friday, is tied with seven other golfers for 16th place while Castles has a 153 total for a 36th-place tie. Engelhardt climbed 13 spots into a tie for 52nd place with his 157 total.

Also scoring for Cal Poly were Thomas Lehman with a second-round 78 for a 158 total and 55th place, and Nathan Clark with an 87 for a 170 aggregate and 78th place.

Grant Booth and Sam Meek, both of Nevada, switched positions atop the leaderboard. Meek was the first-round leader but posted a 73 Saturday while his teammate, Booth, carded a 71 to move in front by one stroke, 141-142.

Vinnie Murphy of Grand Canyon and Ivan Ramirez of Texas Tech share third place with 144 totals as both recorded rounds of 70.
