SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly golfer Thomas Lehman has advanced to sectional qualifying for the 118th U.S. Open.
On Thursday at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, Lehman carded a 71 and is one of five golfers to advance to sectional qualifying. A dozen sectional tournaments will be held from May 21 through June 4.
The 118th U.S. Open will be held June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
Lehman, from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded four birdies and three bogeys for his one-under-par total on the 7,019-yard, par-72 course.
Also at La Purisima on Thursday, Mitch Martin and Jordan Wright both recorded 77s while Tanner Podres posted a 78. Cal Poly men's golf coach Scott Cartwright checked in with an 80 while Sage Casaga posted an 84.
At the Andalusia Country Club in La Quinta, Aaron Dexheimer carded a 76 while Cam Price posted an 81.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday at La Purisima, Mustang Desiree Gillaspy was the low amateur medalist at the local qualifying tournament with rounds of 77 and 71 for a 148 total. She missed qualifying by five strokes.
On the Ike course at Industry Hills Golf Club in City of Industry, Caroline Cantlay carded a 77 and 80 while Alex Phillips posted an 85 and 77. Both missed the cut.
The 73rd U.S. Women's Open will be held May 31-June 3 at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Shoal Creek, Alabama.
