Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Falls at Saint Mary’s on Sunday

MORAGA – Cal Poly men's soccer senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme (above) matched a season high with nine saves, but Saint Mary's – keyed by a hat trick from forward Jake Rudel – posted a 4-0 victory versus the Mustangs Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.

With Sunday's first shot attempt 121 seconds after the whistle, Rudel placed Saint Mary's (5-0-0) in front after latching onto a pass that defender Filippo Zattarin sent from the Saint Mary's half of the field.

Sophomore forward Jacob Lindberg produced Cal Poly's first shot attempt, forcing Gaels goalkeeper Remi Prieur into a 12th-minute save. Junior forward George Grote was then turned away by Prieur three minutes later.

The Gaels, however, doubled their lead in the 16th minute after Boehme was booked for a foul inside his own penalty area. Saint Mary's midfielder Stephen Dougherty converted the penalty attempt to place his side up, 2-0.

Cal Poly senior forward Sean Goode struck the post with an 18th-minute attempt, but Rudel handed Saint Mary's the 3-0 lead in the 28th with a shot near the left post.

Into the second half, Boehme produced seven more saves before Rudel completed the scoring in the 65th.

Cal Poly (1-3-1) closes its five-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a 7 p.m. matchup at CSU Bakersfield.
