Cal Poly Men’s Tennis Rallies in Singles to Defeat UC Davis 4-2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Axel Damiens rallied back in the second set against Tommy Lam at No. 4 defeating him 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) to clinch the dual match. "It always feels good to clinch," said Damiens, "especially in a real rematch against UC Davis. They beat us there (Davis) last year, so its payback here this year for my senior year."

The Mustangs took down UC Davis 4-2 at home on Saturday, April 12, making their overall record 16-5 and 4-0 in conference. They are also still undefeated at home, winning all 10 games at Mustang Courts.

Associate Head Coach Garrett Patton had great things to say about the team after Saturday's win. He said, "We finished the match really strong after losing the doubles. They came out firing in the singles and had to wear them down."

The Mustangs lost the doubles point but won four singles matches to clinch.

In doubles, junior Josh Ortlip and Damiens at No. 1 lost to Ivan Thamma and Everett Maltby 6-3. The freshmen Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiyrk lost to Tommy Lam and Davis Goulak at No. 2, 6-2. Junior Dominic Bechard and senior Karl Enander took down Arjith Jayaraman and Chethan Swanson 6-3.

Singles was the saving grace for the Mustangs. Ortlip started off strong at No. 1 defeating Thamma easily 6-2, 6-2. His win tied the score at 1-1 and gave the Mustangs momentum.

Bechard took down Goulak 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. His singles record this season is 13-1, the best on the team. Bechard said, "Honestly I think this was one of my best matches this season. It was being played on my terms and he was just reacting."

Sophomore Anotine Noel played at No. 3 and defeated Maltby 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 6, Enander fought hard but lost to Chethan Swanson 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Alexander Stater played at No. 5 but did not finish his match against Arjith Jayaraman before Damiens clinched.

The Mustangs play Sunday in a makeup nonconference matchup against Santa Clara at home at 1 p.m.
