SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior center fielder Amanda Sandoval's one-out, run-scoring hit in the bottom of the seventh inning provided the winning margin for the Cal Poly softball team Sunday afternoon as the program closed its ShareSLO Mustang Classic tournament with a 4-3 victory versus North Dakota.
Cal Poly (13-9) took a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh of Sunday's matchup before North Dakota (13-11) tied the game through run-scoring hits from left fielder Taylor Nadler and first baseman Dani Romero.
In the bottom half of the seventh, however, Cal Poly enjoyed a leadoff double from junior catcher Makenna Young before Sandoval (above) singled up the middle to plate the game-winning run.
North Dakota was on the scoreboard first Sunday as two Mustang fielding errors during the top of the first inning placed multiple runners on base for Romero, who singled down the left field line to bring home starting righthander Kaylin VanDomelen.
Cal Poly deadlocked the matchup during the bottom half of the first, initially loading the bags and, with two down, sophomore designated player Shelby Jeffries drew a walk to force home senior shortstop Chelsea Convissar.
Following the first inning, Casper allowed just three hits between the second and fifth innings and only let two Fighting Hawks baserunners into scoring position before giving way to senior righthander Lindsey Chalmers (9-3).
Offensively, the Mustangs were limited to just three singles between the second and fifth innings before three North Dakota errors in the bottom half of the sixth contributed to Cal Poly's 3-1 lead. VanDomelen recorded two quick outs to begin her side of the sixth before hitting Convissar. Errors by North Dakota shortstop Lexi Mayhood and Romero at first base then loaded the bases before Mayhood committed another error on a ball grounded by junior right fielder Crimson Kaiser. The miscue allowed Convissar to score before VanDomelen walked sophomore first baseman Hailey Martin on four pitches to plate freshman left fielder Noellah Ramos for the 3-1 advantage.
Cal Poly resumes action at the March 17-18 Fresno State Friendly. Cal Poly will face Illinois in a Saturday, March 17 doubleheader at 1 p.m. before squaring off against the host Bulldogs for a pair of games on Sunday, March 18 at 12 noon.
