Cal Poly Men's Swim Team Opens Pac-12 Finals With Relays

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Cal Poly men's swimming team opened competition at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday night with two relays at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The Mustangs started the conference meet by finishing in eighth place in the 200-yard medley relay, earning 22 points in the team standings. The squad of Mickey Mackle, Mackey Hopen, Luca Casimiro and Aaron McKinnon finished the race in 1 minute, 31.24 seconds, bettering their seed time coming into the meet (1:33.05). No. 2 Cal, the two-time defending national champion, won at 1:24.42.

Later in the evening, Mackle, Adrian Brynnel, McKinnon and Sonny Fierro (right) teamed to finish eighth in the 800 freestyle relay, at 6:40.24, for another 22 points. Cal Poly cut more than four seconds off of its seed time. No. 4 USC won in 6:16.88.

Events will continue Monday through Wednesday. A recap of the meet will then be shown on the Pac-12 Networks at 9 a.m. March 10, with an encore presentation airing at 8 p.m.
