Cal Poly’s Cootes Breaks School Record at A3 Championships on Saturday

COMPLETE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS 

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – On the third and final day of the A3 Performance Invitational hosted by UC San Diego, sophomore Zach Cootes broke the school record in the Championship Final of the men's 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:48.01 – a full 27 tenths-of-a-second faster than Justin deDianous in 2015 – to provide Cal Poly with a crucial fifth-place finish and 25 points in the overall competition. Cootes (pictured) narrowly missed the "B Standard" NCAA qualifications in the event by a mere two-tenths-of-a-second.

The Cal Poly men's side captured third place during the three-day A3 Performance Invitational (with 857 total points), while the Mustang women's team finished seventh overall (with 616 points).

Cal Poly sophomore Bonnie Diamond placed third in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle championship with a mark of 16:50.62, which earned the Mustangs 27 points in the overall competition. Diamond's time is the fastest 1,650 free since 2011 and is the No. 2 mark in program history.

Cal Poly senior Mickey Mackle earned a fourth-place finish in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with his time of 2:03.33, earning the Mustangs 26 points in the overall competition.

Several other Cal Poly swimmers recorded Top-10 Championship Final finishes, including sophomore Sage Speak who recorded a time of 2:16.77, good for the fifth-best time in the women's 200-breaststroke. Speak's mark on Saturday is the third-fastest 200 breast time in program history.

In the men's 1,650 free, Cal Poly sophomore Pearu Pold delivered a fifth-place finish in the Championship Final, with a mark of 15:32.06, good for 25 points towards the Mustangs overall team total.

The Cal Poly quartet of junior Jack Jenner, sophomores Nolan Newland and Pold and freshman Dominic Dalpiaz recorded a fourth-place finish in the men's 800-yard free relay with a time of 6:40.31 to collect 26 points for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly freshman Dominic Dalpiaz recorded a time of 45.17 in the men's 100-yard freestyle, which earned him a seventh-place finish in the Championship Final and 25 points towards the overall competition.

Cal Poly senior Belen Enguindanos earned also recorded a seventh-place finish in the women's 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 2:02.28, which earned the Mustangs 23 points toward their overall total in the three-day competition.

In Arizona at the Wildcat Diving Invitational, Cal Poly sophomore Lauren Pierce recorded a six-dive total score of 202.65, good for 32nd overall. For complete results from the Wildcat Diving Invitational, click HERE.
