Cal Poly Women's Golf First in PLNU Super San Diego Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Morgan Thomas and Asia Adell carded scores in the 70s to lead Cal Poly to the top spot Monday after the first of two rounds of play in the Point Loma Nazarene University Super San Diego Championship at the Riverwalk Golf Course.

Thomas carded a 76 and is the individual leader after 18 holes of play while Adell recorded a 79 on the 6,000-yard, par-72 course.

Thomas (pictured at right) leads Shelby Hooper of Chico State by one stroke and Mariana Pazos of Academy Art by another stroke with 18 holes to play Tuesday morning. Adell is tied for fourth place with Megan Woodland, both with 79s.

As a team, Cal Poly shot a four-person 18-hole 321 total, five strokes ahead of Victoria (British Columbia). Grand Canyon is third at 327 with Chico State at 329 and Sonoma State at 330. There are 19 schools in the two-day event.

Laura Howard of Cal Poly is in a tie for ninth place with six other golfers, all with 81s, while Kirsten Locke is tied for 38th with an 85 and Taylor Yoshitake is tied for 47th place with an 87.

Four other members of head coach Scott Cartwright's team are competing as individuals.

Caitlin Farley is tied for 26th place with an 84 while Alex Phillips carded an 85 and is tied for 38th place. Giovanna Ascolani is tied for 44th place with an 86 while Sorelle Sedej is tied for 58th place following an 89.

The PLNU Super San Diego Championship is the first spring event for Cal Poly.
