Cal Poly Finishes Second in Red Rocks Invitational

SEDONA, Ariz. – The Cal Poly women's golf team posted another 301 total Saturday and finished second in the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona at the Oakcreek Country Club.

The Mustangs' 602 total for 36 holes was just five shots behind team champion Northern Arizona, which carded a 297 Saturday. Grand Canyon climbed from eighth to third place with a final-round 298 for a 606 aggregate on the 5,579-yard, par-72 course.

Leading the way for Cal Poly were Sophie Bergland (pictured at right) and Madison Hirsch, both with 151 totals and a tie for 15th place. Bergland posted a final-round 75 while Hirsch carded a 74.

Jamie Binns and Meridith Hirsch were tied for second place with three other golfers after the first round, all with 72s, but Binns recorded an 83 Saturday and finished tied for 43rd place with her 155 total while Meridith Hirsch, competing as an individual, carded an 82 for a 154 total and a tie for 37th place.

Completing Cal Poly's scoring were Desiree Gillaspy with a final-round 76 for a 152 total and a tie for 24th place, and Jamie Harada with a 76 for a 154 total and a tie for 37th place.

Competing as an individual, Helen Davis posted a 79 for a 157 total and a tie for 59th place.

Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon, the first-round leader by three strokes, lost to Sophie Peters of Nebraska-Omaha in a playoff for the individual title. Both finished 36 holes with even-par 144 totals. Jaengkit finished with a 75 and Peters a 72.

The final round was marred by low temperatures, strong winds and some sleet.

Cal Poly returns to action March 12-13 at the SUU Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah at the Sunbrook Country Club in St. George, Utah.
