Cal Poly Finishes Tied for Fifth in Pizza Hut Thunderbird Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Madison Hirsch of Cal Poly recorded a 75 and moved into the top 20 during the final round of the Pizza Hut Thunderbird Invitational women's golf tournament hosted by Southern Utah on Friday at the Sunbrook Golf Course.

Hirsch (pictured at right) moved up 11 positions into a tie for 14th place with her 10-over-par 154 total. 

Mustang teammates Sophie Bergland and Desiree Gillaspy also finished in the top 20. Bergland claimed 18th place, an improvement of seven spots, with a final-round 76 and a 155 total while Gillaspy finished 20th with her second round of 78.

As a team, Cal Poly climbed one spot into a tie for fifth place with Southern Utah, both with four-person 36-hole 622 totals. Cal Poly carded a final-round 305 while Southern Utah checked in with a 311.

South Dakota State carded a blistering 295 to climb from fifth place to the team title with a 609 total, one shot ahead of runner-up Oral Roberts. Grand Canyon had a 611 while first-round leader Georgetown shot 318 and finished fourth at 617.

There were 14 teams and 87 golfers in the two-day event.

Individual winner was Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon with rounds of 72 and 73 for a one-over-par 145 total, three shots ahead of a trio of golfers – Cassandra Lesa of Utah Valley, Abby Dufrane of South Dakota and Jacquelyn Eleey of Georgetown. Eleey, the first-round leader, carded a final-round 79.

Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Jamie Harada with a 77 for a 158 total and 29th place, and Jamie Binns with a 77 for a 159 total and 35th place.

Competing as individuals, Mustang Meridith Hirsch posted a final-round 78 for a 156 total and 20th place, while Helen Davis posted a 77 for a 161 total and 46th place.

Madison Hirsch finished third in par-3 scoring at even par. Gillaspy posted five birdies over 36 holes, fifth-best total in the tournament.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs will compete in the Battle at the Rock, held at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, on April 5-7.
