Cha, Gillaspy Lead Cal Poly Through Opening Round at Cypress Ridge

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Mustang sophomore Tiffany Cha shot an even-par, second-place opening round of 72 at Cypress Ridge Golf Course on Saturday, two strokes back of the lead heading into Sunday's conclusion at the Cal Poly Invitational.

Santa Clara senior Kyleigh Moreno closed Day 1 atop the leaderboard, carding a 2-under 70 as her Broncos moved to a six-stroke lead over the Mustangs, 298-304.

Cha, competing individually, highlighted her morning with an eagle on the 454-yard 9th hole. She also birdied No. 7.

Moreno birdied the 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 18th holes en route to her advantage.

In the five-player team standings, Desiree Gillaspy leads Cal Poly tied for fifth place after shooting a 74, one stroke ahead of fellow senior Jamie Binns (tied for seventh).

Also for Cal Poly — defending Big West champions — junior Mallory Muehlbauer is tied for ninth place via 76, followed by senior Jamie Harada, the conference Golfer of the Month for September (17th, at 79), along with senior Sophie Bergland (tied for 24th; 80).

A fog delay in the morning pushed the tournament's first 18 holes back to a 10:45 a.m. start. Sunday's final round will commence at 8:30 a.m.
