IRVINE, Calif. — With three golfers in the top 20, the defending Big West Conference champion Cal Poly women's golf team is tied for fourth place with UC Irvine after the first round of play in the 2018 Big West Conference Championship on Sunday.
Playing at the Strawberry Farms Golf Course, Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs compiled a four-person 16-over-par 300 total on the 6,038-yard, par-71 layout.
Cal Poly and UC Irvine are 15 strokes behind first-round leader Long Beach State. With four players in the top 10, the 49ers hold a 10-stroke lead over UC Davis, 285-295, entering Monday's second round. Cal State Fullerton is third at 299.
Mustang Caroline Cantlay posted a 72 and is tied for sixth place with two other golfers, two strokes behind first-round leader Jennifer Yu of Long Beach State. Four golfers share second place at even par.
There are eight teams and 40 golfers in the field.
Cantlay is second in par-3 scoring at one under par while Harada is second in par-5 scoring at two under par. Cantlay and Bergland each carded four birdies, No. 2 in the field, while Gillaspy's 12 pars are tied for No. 4.
The second round on Monday begins at 8:30 a.m., with Cal Poly teeing off with the second group of teams at 9:15 a.m. Final round on Tuesday also tees off at 8:30 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women's regionals which are held at Stanford, Calif., Tallahassee, Fla., Austin, Tex., and Madison, Wisc., from May 7-9. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will be hosted May 17-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
