STANFORD, Calif. – Matt Wilhelm won by major decision and Spencer Empey earned a decision as the Cal Poly wrestling team dropped a 32-13 decision to Penn in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Sunday afternoon inside Stanford's Burnham Pavilion & Ford Center.
Wilhelm (pictured at right) improved to 10-6 with a 14-1 major decision against Khalil Whimper at 174 pounds. He jumped to a 6-0 lead with a takedown and four-point near fall in the opening period, added an escape and takedown for a 9-0 advantage in the second period and two more takedowns plus riding time in the final period for the win.
Empey decisioned Patrik Garren 5-2 at 285 pounds. Empey trailed 2-1 after the first period and rode out the second period before turning the match around with an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period for the win.
Cal Poly's other points came with a forfeit at 125 pounds.
Penn won three bouts by fall and another by technical fall.
Cal Poly, 0-3 in dual meets, has the week off for the opening week of Winter Quarter, returning to action Jan. 19 at Northern Colorado and Jan. 21 at Air Force.
