Cal Poly Women's Soccer Home to Host Long Beach State on Friday Night

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team has returned home to host Long Beach State on Friday night. Kickoff against the 49ers is set for 7 p.m. at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

After concluding non-conference play 5-5-1, the Mustangs have been edged by one goal each in four straight games to open Big West play, including 2-1 at UC Davis and 3-2 at defending regular-season champion CSUN this past week.

Long Beach State (7-4-2) comes into the match tied for fifth in the Big West standings with 4 points (1-1-1).

The Big West table awards 3 points per win and 1 per draw, with the top four regular-season squads advancing to the conference tournament. CSUN will host the postseason tournament on Nov. 2 (semifinals on ESPN3/WatchESPN) and Nov. 5 (the championship game, televised by FOX Sports PT).

UC Irvine is in first place at 3-0-1 (10 points; 8-3-4 overall), with UC Riverside in a close second (9 points) at 3-0-0 (6-7-2).

Senna Brennan scored against the Aggies on Oct. 5, equalizing in the 62nd minute. Megan Abutin converted a 45th-minute pass from Sydney Knauer vs. the Matadors on Oct. 8, before Danielle Anderson also tied the match in the 70th, heading in a free kick from Chelsea Barry.

All but one of the Mustangs' losses this season have been by a one-goal margin. Cal Poly will wrap up its home schedule with Senior Night vs. Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Oct. 19, also at 7 p.m.

ABUTIN CLIMBS IN RECORD BOOK: Cal Poly senior Megan Abutin — selected to the Preseason All-Big West Conference Team and the Hoosier Challenge Cup All-Tournament Team — has continued to rise in the Cal Poly record book.

A fifth-year student-athlete granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA after a season-ending injury in the 2016 opener at Cal, Abutin scored her 19th career goal at CSUN, moving past Amy Earle (1993-97) for sole possession of No. 8 in school history.

Her 21 career assists — No. 2 in program history (three back of tying Kolleen Kassis' school record set from 1992-95) — rank No. 18 nationally among all Division I players.

BARRY, HANSEN ALSO LEAD 18 LETTERWINNERS, 12 NEWCOMERS: In addition to Abutin (a third-team NSCAA All-West Region honoree in 2014), junior defender Chelsea Barry and senior midfielder Emily Hansen are former Big West honorees.

Barry, a 2016 all-conference second-team selection, has played all 1,395 minutes this year. Meanwhile, Hansen, a 2014 All-Big West Freshman selection with two assists this season, ranks No. 7 in program history in career starts, with 68.

Redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler and sophomores Jessica Johnson and Megan Demijohn are tied for second on the squad with two goals apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown made nine saves last week in her third and fourth games back from a midseason injury, bringing her career total to 145 (11 back of eighth all-time at Cal Poly). Brown has two complete shutouts this season, while senior Brittney Viboch has one, and the tandem combined on a fourth shared shutout.
