PASO ROBLES – An 84th-minute headed goal by freshman forward Bryan Ibarra (above) accounted for the difference Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's soccer program secured its third successive 1-0 victory by edging Cal State Bakersfield at Paso Robles Horse Park.
Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme (above) added six saves to chalk up his third successive shutout for Cal Poly (3-4-0), which produced its first three-match winning streak since Sept. 20-Oct. 1, 2015. Boehme, ranked third among NCAA Division I goalkeepers with 6.3 saves per match, has not allowed a goal from open play in his last 376 minutes of action.
The Mustangs had placed three shots on target through the opening 83 minutes before winning their seventh corner of the day. From the right corner flag, midfielder Alex Sanchez lobbed his corner attempt toward the far post. Sophomore forward Diego Alonso, who led Cal Poly with three shot attempts, headed the corner back toward goal, where Ibarra headed home the game-winning strike from three yards.
Boehme, who recorded four of his six saves during the second half, made his final stop 58 seconds from full time, turning away Cal State Bakersfield midfielder Niklas Koerber for the second time Saturday.
Cal Poly continues its four-match home stand and completes Big West Conference preparations versus Portland on Monday, Sept. 25. Kickoff inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
