SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program forced UC Riverside goalkeeper Edwyn Gutierrez into seven saves Saturday evening, but a 56th-minute goal from Highlanders forward Hugo Magana, Jr. undid the Mustangs as the hosts claimed a 1-0 win at UCR Soccer Stadium.
Mustang junior midfielder Emmanuel Perez placed three of his seven shot attempts on target for Cal Poly (4-6-1, 0-2-0), which tripled UC Riverside's shot output (18-6).
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado chalked up both of his two saves during the opening half before UC Riverside (6-5-2, 1-1-0) produced the game-winner with its final shot on target of the night.
The Mustangs tested Gutierrez twice more after the opening goal, but couldn't find the equalizer in the program's first visit to UC Riverside in three years.
Cal Poly resumes action on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when hosting No. 24 Cal State Fullerton inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
