TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior righthander Sierra Hyland (top) struck out 13 Oregon State hitters Sunday morning as the Cal Poly softball program closed the Arizona State-hosted Kajikawa Classic with a 7-3 victory against Oregon State.
Hyland, who recorded her second double-digit strikeout game in her third start this year, struck out five of the first six hitters she faced and Cal Poly led wire-to-wire courtesy of a two-run second inning. After stringing together one-out singles, senior right fielder Betsy Colburn and junior left fielder Courtney Tyler both moved into scoring position following a groundout by freshman center fielder Noa Yakir. Sophomore third baseman Stephanie Heyward then reached on a throwing error by Oregon State shortstop McKenna Arriola and the miscue plated Colburn and Tyler.
The Beavers halved Cal Poly's lead in the top of the third as Arriola produced a two-out run-scoring single.
Cal Poly, however, placed the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning. Tyler led off with a single and after Hyland doubled, a fielder's choice from senior first baseman Breana West plated Tyler. Two batters later, Colburn produced a two-run double down the left field line to increase Cal Poly's lead to 5-1.
Two more Beaver errors in the inning contributed to two more Cal Poly runs and Hyland retired six of the next seven hitters she faced to preserve the 7-1 advantage.
A two-run double by designated player Natalie Hampton accounted for Oregon State's final runs in the sixth inning, but Hyland struck out two more hitters in the seventh to close out the Beavers.
Cal Poly continues action at the Feb. 19-21 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. Cal Poly's portion of the tournament draw begins on Friday, Feb. 19 versus Central Michigan (3:30 p.m.) and Army (6 p.m.).
