CATHEDRAL CITY – Junior righthander Sierra Hyland struck out nine and drove home the eventual winning run and senior first baseman Breana West homered as the Cal Poly softball program closed the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 triumph versus No. 9 Arizona.
Hyland (4-2) kept Arizona to just a hit during the opening two innings before and the Mustangs broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the third. With two down after sophomore designated player Stephanie Heyward lined into a double play, sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval singled ahead of junior left fielder Courtney Tyler's double. Hyland then delivered a single into center field to score Sandoval for a 1-0 advantage.
Staked to the lead, Hyland held Arizona (8-3) to solitary hits in the third and fourth innings before striking outs two Wildcats to close the fifth. She retired Arizona in order during the sixth and, after West homered to lead off the top of the seventh, Hyland conceded just one more hit during the bottom half to cement Cal Poly's victory.
Hyland, who walked just two, allowed four hits in the 111-pitch effort.
Sunday's victory marked Cal Poly's first all-time win versus Arizona in four meetings and Cal Poly's first win against a ranked opponent since topping then-No. 8 Oregon 6-4 on Feb. 7, 2014.
The Mustangs (6-4) return to action at the Feb. 26-28 Pacific-hosted Libby Matson Tournament. Cal Poly opens tournament play on Friday, Feb. 26 versus Purdue (10 a.m.) an Cal State Bakersfield (12:15 p.m.).
