SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly softball junior righthander Sierra Hyland (above) matched a career high with 15 strikeouts in tossing her third career no-hitter Thursday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program opened its annual Mustang Classic tournament at Bob Janssen Field with a 1-0 victory against Saint Peter's. Cal Poly completed the Thursday sweep versus the Peacocks with a 9-1, five-inning triumph as Mustang head coach Jenny Condon became just the 10th coach in Big West Conference history to reach 300 career victories.
During Thursday's opening game, Hyland (8-2) – ranked first among NCAA Division I pitchers with 119 strikeouts this season – walked just two Peacocks in throwing her first no-hitter since a 4-0 victory against Maryland on Feb. 22, 2016. Hyland, who tossed her fourth shutout of 2016, retired the first seven hitters she faced and struck out the Saint Peter's side in the second and sixth innings. No Saint Peter's baserunner reached scoring position.
Cal Poly (13-4), held to three hits through the opening three innings, pushed across the decisive run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two down, junior second baseman Ashley Tornio singled before stealing second. Senior right fielder Betsy Colburn then picked up her third RBI of 2016 with a single into center field.
Hyland, who tossed 70 percent of her 101 pitches for strikes, led Cal Poly offensively with two hits.
During Thursday's second game, Cal Poly led from the onset with a two-run first inning highlighted by a Hyland run-scoring single.
Cal Poly added another run in the third as Colburn drove home sophomore pinch runner Alina Goodrum with a single left field.
The Mustangs then placed the game out of reach with a five-run fourth inning. Sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval followed sophomore designated player Stephanie Heyward's one-out double with a run-scoring single and Hyland added a run-scoring double of her own for a 5-0 lead. Senior first baseman Breana West and Colburn also contributed run-scoring hits to help round off the five-run inning.
In the fifth, West added another run-scoring base hit to plate junior left fielder Courtney Tyler for Cal Poly's first run-rule victory of 2016.
In the circle, Mustang sophomore righthander Lindsey Chalmers improved to 5-2 after chalking up four strikeouts in the complete-game, four-hitter.
