Cal Poly Rolls Past Toledo, Falls to Weber State at Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior Sierra Hyland's grand slam helped fuel the Cal Poly softball program's 9-0, six-inning Friday afternoon victory against Weber State at the Mustang Classic as the team split its doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field. During Friday's opener, Cal Poly saw an eight-game winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss versus Weber State.

During Friday's second game versus first-time opponent Toledo (3-11), Cal Poly (14-5) notched the eventual winning runs during the bottom of the second inning. After senior right fielder Betsy Colburn led off with a walk and junior second baseman Ashley Tornio reached through a fielding error by Toledo third baseman Chandler Rice, Mustang sophomore catcher Susanne Morris walked to load the bases. Sophomore shortstop Chelsea Convissar then drew a third walk in the inning to force home Colburn and, two batters later, sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval unleashed a run-scoring single to plate Tornio for the 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs then loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning against Toledo starter Danni Ryan (0-4) and Hyland swatted her team leading third home run of 2016 to left center field.

Cal Poly closed the matchup with a three-run sixth inning paced by sophomore designated player Stephanie Heyward's (above) two-run triple as the Mustangs posted their second run-rule victory in as many days.

Staked to the early lead versus the Rockets, Mustang sophomore righthander Lindsey Chalmers finalized a complete-game, three-hit shutout with four strikeouts in improving to 6-2. Chalmers, who walked just two, faced only four hitters above the minimum.

Sandoval finished with three hits against Toledo.

During Friday's opening game against Weber State (11-7), Hyland limited the Wildcats to one hit through the opening three innings before conceding the opening run in the top of the fourth. After doubling to open the inning, Weber State third baseman Alyson Kulp advanced to third base on a Hyland wild pitch. Two batters later, right fielder Sara Hingsberger singled to place Weber State up 1-0.

The Wildcats then ran their lead to 2-0 in the fifth as designated player Mackenzi Corta produced a run-scoring single to bring home Kubo.

Cal Poly broke through with its lone run in the bottom of the sixth as Heyward singled with one down to score freshman pinch runner Makenna Young.

Hyland singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but was cut down at second base on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt from senior first baseman Breana West. Colburn followed with a base hit, but Cal Poly failed to advance a runner past second.

In the circle, Hyland struck out four against zero walks, but allowed nine hits in falling to 8-3.
