Cal Poly Softball Heads to Feb. 21-23 Silicon Valley Classic


SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program faces two NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a season ago and both host programs during its five-game schedule at the Feb. 21-23 Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted at San Jose State and Santa Clara. Resuming action following a 5-2 victory against California (Feb. 16), Cal Poly (5-4) opens Silicon Valley Classic play on Friday, Feb. 21 versus defending Mountain West Conference champion Colorado State (4-5) at 11:30 a.m. and San Jose State (9-2) at 4:30 p.m. Action shifts to Santa Clara on Saturday, Feb. 22 as the Mustangs face California Baptist (4-5) at 11:30 a.m. and the host Broncos (5-4) at 4:30 p.m. Cal Poly completes play on Sunday, Feb. 23 against Boise State (6-4) at 9 a.m. Both Colorado State and Boise State reached the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

CAL POLY VERSUS SILICON VALLEY CLASSIC OPPONENTS: Cal Poly won the last matchup with Colorado State, 2-1 (Feb. 23, 2019), and leads the Division I series, 11-5 … Cal Poly looks to stem a four-game slide against San Jose State when meeting the Spartans for the first time since a 6-5, eight-inning loss (Feb. 8, 2014). The Division I series is tied, 12-12 … Cal Poly edged California Baptist in the only previous meeting, 5-4 (March 16, 2019) … the second most frequent non-conference opponent in Cal Poly's program history after Pacific, Santa Clara trails in the Division I series to the Mustangs, 33-12. Cal Poly has won 12 successive matchups versus Santa Clara dating to the 2006 season … Boise State has prevailed in both previous meetings with Cal Poly, topping the Mustangs, 7-5 (Feb. 19, 2011), and, 7-1 (Feb. 24, 2012).

ALLMAN LEADS CAL POLY IN THE CIRCLE: Keyed by a career high 11-strikeout performance versus Saint Mary's (Feb. 14), sophomore lefthander Krystyna Allman (3-1) enters the Silicon Valley Classic leading the Big West Conference in strikeouts (29) while ranking second in complete games (three) and third in victories, strikeouts per seven innings (6.41) and innings pitched (31.2). Having already matched her win total from last year and exceeded her strikeout total from 2019, Allman also struck out seven Fordham hitters in a 6-1 victory (Feb. 15).

FRANKENBERGER'S FAST START: One of six positional starters batting at least .316, freshman outfielder Sydney Frankenberger leads Cal Poly with 12 hits, eight runs and 33 at-bats while ranking fourth with a .364 (12-for-33) batting average. Having reached base in eight of nine games, Frankenberger is one of only two Mustangs with a four-hit games thus far, finishing 4-for-4 against Fordham (Feb. 15).

MUSTANGS FACE NATION'S FINEST ONCE MORE IN 2020: In what has become a hallmark of 16th-year head coach Jenny Condon's tenure, Cal Poly will again contest one of the more competitive schedules in Division I during the 2020 season. In total, Cal Poly plays 15 games against program's that reached last year's NCAA Tournament.
