O'Brien Heads to NCAA Swimming Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly senior Rachel O'Brien will compete in two events at the NCAA Championships this week at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

O'Brien will start with 100-yard butterfly prelims Friday morning, shortly after 11 a.m., before the 200 fly prelims begin Saturday morning. Finals for each event are held in the evening of each day, after 7 p.m.

O'Brien is seeded 29th in the 200 fly, with a time of 1 minute, 57.27 seconds. By virtue of her top-38 ranking in that event, O'Brien also ensured herself of being able to compete in the 100 fly, in which she also clocked a provisionally qualifying time at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in February.

In the 100 fly, she's seeded 40th, at 53.08 seconds. She's Cal Poly's school record-holder in each event.

O'Brien is the program's first woman to swim at the national championships since the school moved to the Division I level in 1994.

O'Brien, who transferred from Oregon State before the start of this season, also advanced to the NCAA Championship meet as a junior and sophomore while with the Beavers. At last year's national championships, O'Brien placed 17th in the 200 fly prelims (at 1:56.87), one spot shy of earning All-American status.

More than 275 swimmers are expected to compete in the championships, which are co-hosted by the Indiana Sports Corporation and IUPUI. will stream finals sessions live on Friday and Saturday, and a 90-minute show recapping the meet will be televised on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
