O'Brien Breaks Own School Record at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Cal Poly senior Rachel O'Brien broke her own school record Saturday morning in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships held in IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

O'Brien (right) finished 18th in the prelims with a time of 1 minute, 56.78 seconds. She and 17th-place Noelle Tarazona of UCLA (at 1:56.61) earned alternate status for the finals.

O'Brien came into the meet seeded 29th in the event, with the old school record of 1:57.27.

O'Brien also swam in the 100 fly prelims Friday, placing 44th at 53.99 seconds. The first woman to swim at the NCAA Championships since Cal Poly moved to the Division I level in 1994, O'Brien also holds the 100 fly school record, at 53.08.

A 90-minute show recapping the national championships will be televised on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
