Mackle Wins 200 IM on Day 1 of Tri-Meet Against Hawai'i, UCSB

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly swimming and diving team hosted Hawai'i and UC Santa Barbara for the first day of a two-day tri-meet at Anderson Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon.

Cal Poly sophomore Mickey Mackle won the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:53.26. (His season-best as a freshman was 1:49.49.) Earlier this year, Mackle (pictured at right) won the team's King of the Pool title at the season-opening pentathlon exhibition with Cal on Sept. 20.

Friday's 200 IM also featured a fourth-place showing from Mustang junior Paolo Stanchi (1:54.95).

Sonny Fierro, a sophomore for Cal Poly, finished second in the 500 free, at 4:34.98.

Cal Poly senior Jill Jones was second in the women's 50 free, finishing in 24.55 seconds. Much like Mackle, Jones started this fall by showing her versatility in winning Cal Poly's Queen of the Pool title a little more than a month ago. (Jones' best time during her junior year was 23.84.)

Taylor Guy, a sophomore teammate, came in fourth in the event on Friday, at 24.72.

The Cal Poly women were second in the 200 free relay, as Alisha Bender, Rachel Cleak, Emma Henderson and Jones combined to clock a 1:37.19.

The Mustang divers were led by a pair of third-place finishes, as sophomore Grace Greenwood scored a 254.65 on the women's 1-meter board, and junior Elliott Adams posted a 277.60 on the men's 3-meter. Paul Fischetti, a freshman, added another top-five performance, scoring a fourth-place 262.70.

Day 2 will begin with the next session of swimming at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by diving (likely starting at about noon), before the meet is concluded by a final session of strokes expected to start around 3 p.m.
