Davies Highlights Final Day of Arena Invitational for Cal Poly

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – For the third day in a row, Cal Poly freshman swimmer Caleb Davies sprinted to an impressive time at the Arena Invitational held at East Los Angeles College, helping to lead the Mustangs during the three-day meet's last round of competition on Saturday evening.

Davies finished second in the championship final of the men's 100-yard freestyle, in 45.07 seconds. His early-season swim, which scored a team-best 28 points, was 0.26 seconds shy of the school record (44.81) set by former two-time NCAA Championships qualifier Peter Kline three seasons ago. Hawai'i freshman Yuri Samouilich, who holds multiple age-group records for Israel, won in 44.23.

Heading into the conclusion of the meet, Davies — who came to Cal Poly as a top-20 high school All-American in the 50 free — had already clocked a pair of sub-20-second splits while anchoring relays on Thursday and Friday (19.55 being the fastest).

Five schools competed in the men's races, while 11 women's teams swam at the UC San Diego-hosted invitational.

Sonny Fierro also had a top-five finish for the Mustangs, as he was third in the 1,650 freestyle, with a time of 15:31.16. The sophomore is ultimately looking to build upon his ninth-place finish in the event at the Pac-12 Championships last year (15:27.62).

Additionally, fellow sophomore Dustin Bolt (pictured at right) was sixth in the mile event, at 15:49.93, and senior Adrian Brynnel added a 10th-place finish at 16:12.57.

Junior Paolo Stanchi was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (in 2:02.75), as well as ninth in the 200 backstroke (1:49.16). Sophomore Mickey Mackle was sixth in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:03.85, and classmate Kendall Dunn swam to a time of 2:07.20 to place 10th.

Freshman Austin Cunniff had a 1:54.68 in the prelims of the 200 fly before clocking a 1:56.35 in the finals for an eighth-place finish.

In the last event of the night, Davies again accounted for an anchor leg, teaming with Brynnel, junior Mackey Hopen and fellow freshman Blake Motal for a second-place finish in the 400 free relay, at 3:02.39.

Senior Rachel Cleak led the women's squad with a sixth-place showing in the 200-yard butterfly, at 2:04.47.

Sophomore Gabby Lindblad was seventh in the women's 200 breaststroke, at 2:20.57.

Also posting a top-10 finish was sophomore Nicole Antoniuk, who was 10th in the 1,650 free, with a time of 17:19.82.

In the 200 backstroke, senior Amanda Maffris finished 12th by clocking a 2:03.69. Freshman Jessi Modlich also swam in the consolation race, putting up a 2:06.09 for 14th place.

Cal Poly finished in fifth place in the women's team standings, with a score of 585.5. San Diego State won with 1,196.5. The men's squad was fourth, compiling 1,084 points; Hawai'i prevailed with 1,649.

The Mustangs will now prepare for the AT&T Winter National Championships, held in Knoxville, Tenn., from Dec. 5-Dec. 7.
