Relay Team Nearly Breaks School Record for Cal Poly at MPSF Finals

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — A couple of top-seven individual finishes in championship finals and a 400-yard freestyle relay performance that nearly broke a school record highlighted the final day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships for the Cal Poly women's swimming and diving team on Saturday night.

The Mustangs finished in sixth place, with a final tally of 317.5 to conclude the meet, which has unfolded since Wednesday at two sites in southern California. Cal Poly ended ahead of San Diego (302) and Loyola Marymount (252).

UC Davis won the conference title, atop the board at 712.5, edging runner-up UC Santa Barbara's 638. BYU came in third (at 620), in front of Hawai'i (478) and Pacific (340).

Seniors Rachel Cleak, Jill Jones and Kelsey Engel, along with freshman Karoline Eckhart, teamed to finish sixth in the finale of the night, touching the 400 free relay wall in 3 minutes, 25.92 seconds — which was just 33-hundredths off the all-time program standard.

Sophomore Taylor Guy was fifth in the 200 butterfly, in 2:03.70, a season-best by more than three seconds, for 14 points in the team column. Cleak added a 10th-place swim in the event, at 2:02.27, to chalk up seven more points.

Senior Amanda Maffris had a seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke, in 2:03.58, another season-best, to accrue 12 points. Jessi Modlich, a freshman, added a 15th-place finish in the consolation final, in 2:05.65, for two points.

Sophomore Gabby Lindblad was ninth in the 200 breaststroke, in 2:19.59, her fastest time of the year, to record nine points.

Additionally, senior Taylor Spivey, who has been with the program since it transitioned to the MPSF from the Big West Conference in 2010, ended her Mustang career by scoring five points in the 1,650 free, thanks to a 12th-place finish at 17:30.30, another season-best. She was just ahead of sophomore Nicole Antoniuk (in 13th at 17:32.96, for four points).

Jones swam in the consolation final of the 100 free, finishing 10th overall at a season-best 51.48, thus earning seven points.

Meanwhile, in the platform diving competition at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, senior Sami McIntyre led the Mustangs with a 12th-place, five-dive total score of 166.05, for five points.

Fellow senior Meaghan O'Meara placed 16th, with a score of 141.95, adding a point.

The Cal Poly men's team is off until Feb. 26-March 8, when the Pac-12 Championships will be held at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
