De Peralta Wins Queen Title for Cal Poly; Mackle, Nguyen Tie as Kings

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly juniors Mickey Mackle and Allison de Peralta, as well as freshman Brandon Nguyen, won individual titles for the Mustangs at the annual season-opening King & Queen of the Pool pentathlon exhibition hosted with Cal on Friday afternoon at Anderson Aquatic Center.

De Peralta's combined time of 5:03.99 over the five events added up to a 12th-place overall finish. She was ninth in the 100-yard backstroke, at 58.64.

The Mustangs swept 19th through 22nd on the women's side, as junior Taylor Guy touched the wall in a total of 5:09.95, followed closely by fellow junior Gabby Lindblad (5:10.01), freshman Sophia Kuvan (5:16.30) and sophomore Maddy Pendleton (5:17.03).

Cal Poly performed particularly well in the 100 breaststroke, paced by a seventh-place time from Lindblad (at 1:08.19), followed in eighth by freshman Sage Speak (1:09.16).

Golden Bear sophomore and U.S. National Team member Celina Li won the overall crown at 4:42.90. Four-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin, also a Cal sophomore, claimed the 100 freestyle title at 50.27.

Mackle and Nguyen, meanwhile, despite the remarkable mathematical odds, tied to the hundredths after five events — both finishing with overall 18th-place aggregates of 4:25.51.

Mackle's top showing came in the 100 individual medley, at 52.56 (good for 13th). It was his third consecutive team crown at the meet.

Nguyen was 10th in the 100 breast, at 58.57. (Mustang senior Jimmy Deiparine also provided one of the day's top highlights, coming in fourth in the 100 breast at 56.12.)

Cal Poly senior Paolo Stanchi was 22nd altogether, at 4:29.48.

Will Hamilton from Cal, who two years ago won the national title in the 200 fly, took the men's top honor Friday in 4:07.25. His victory was bolstered by first-place swims in both the 100 IM (at 49.15) and 100 fly (48.35).
