Cal Poly Men’s 5th, Women’s 7th After Day Two of MPSF Championships


MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Cal Poly junior Caleb Davies broke the school record in the men's 50-yard freestyle (with a mark of 20.02 during the preliminary round of the event) and sophomore Nolan Newland won the men's 500 free (4:25.58) during preliminary action of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Thursday at East Los Angeles College.

After two days – and 14 championship events – the Cal Poly men's side is fifth overall (169 points), while the women's side is seventh (81). BYU leads the men's side with 312 points, while the UC Davis women's team edged the University of Hawai'i for first-place after two days, 242-241.

Davies broke his own program record (20.13 in 2015) and sixth-place finish overall in the 5- free final (20.33). Newland managed a fourth-place finish in the 500 free final (4:27.25). 

Cal Poly sophomore Zach Cootes recorded a 'B' standard finish in the men's 200 IM final on Thursday with a time of 1:48.45, good for ninth place. Cootes broke his own personal-best (1:49.69 last season) in the event and his mark is good for second on the program's all-time list.

Additionally, Cootes finished 11th during the preliminary round of the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.79, which is now the fifth-best mark in program history.

On the women's side, Cal Poly sophomore Bonnie Diamond raced to a sixth-place finish in the 500 free final (4:56.29), while freshman Meghan Merlihan finished eighth in the same event with a time of 4:59.39.

Cal Poly sophomore Pearu Pold delivered a 500 free mark of 4:27.09 during the preliminary round of action – fourth among all competitors in the event – which now stands as the third-best mark in program history.

During the championship final, Pold swam the event in 4:27.93, which was good for sixth-place overall. Pold's finish helped generate 13 more points towards Cal Poly's overall championship team total.

Joining Davies in the 200 free relay was junior Jack Jenner and freshmen Zack Allen and Dominic Dalpiaz, who produced a third-place finish in the event with a race time of 1:21.07. The quartet's mark provided the Cal Poly men's side with 32 points towards its aggregate total. 

The Cal Poly quartet of senior Taylor Guy, junior Dani Orlandi, sophomore Sage Speak and freshman Emily Imfeld collected 24 points with a seventh-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.46.

Cal Poly continues the MPSF Championships on Friday with the preliminary round starting at 10 a.m. Friday's finals events include both the men's and women's 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.
