Cal Poly Collects Three Points With 2-1 Victory Over UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. — Junior forward Elise Krieghoff scored her 44th career goal, one shy of the school record, and sophomore midfielder Lydia Anderson also recorded a goal as the Cal Poly women's soccer team jumped to a 2-0 first-half lead and held on to beat UC Irvine 2-1 in a Big West Conference match Friday night at Anteater Stadium.

Krieghoff scored her 12th goal of the season in the fifth minute, and Anderson tallied her second goal of the year in the 19th minute as the Mustangs improved their Big West record to 3-2-0.

Krieghoff directed a pass from sophomore forward Megan Abutin from the right corner of the box into the net, giving Cal Poly an early 1-0 lead. For Abutin, it was her team-leading eighth assist of the season.

Krieghoff picked up her second assist of the year, passing a short corner to Anderson at the top of the box. Anderson drilled the ball into the center of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

UC Irvine cut the two-goal deficit in half 10 minutes into the second half. A loose ball was crossed into the box, rolled to Bianca Frontino at the top of the box, and she capitalized for her first goal of the season.

Mustang junior goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made seven saves, including one on a UC Irvine header in the 89th minute. She also made three saves in a 30-second span midway through the second half.

With 12 goals this season after a school-record 21 as a sophomore a year ago, Krieghoff now has 44 career goals, one shy of the school mark set by Kolleen Kassis from 1992-95.

Cal Poly, which will host the Big West Tournament on Nov. 6 and 9, returns to action Sunday at UC Riverside, starting at 1 p.m.
